Nonna knows best. What part of Sicily is she from ? I wonder if you grew up with her making ‘scoccia’ (which was the slang version of focaccia, but is actually more of a filled pie than a fluffy crusty pan bread) pies around Easter time? I think it’s a southern Sicilian thing.
I grew up in Catania in the eastern part of Sicily close to Mt Etna. It was almost our back yard. Yes I made scocciá you just brought back memories. I’ll make it soon and record it. Thanks for mentioning it. It’s mostly southern , but some make it from other regions. Are you from there?
My grandmother on my fathers side has roots in Catania. My mothers side is all Ragusa. We are a mix of southern Sicilian and North African (by way of Italy). The closer you are to Etna the better the soil, the better all the things that grow from the dirt. I love your page. I’ve been subscribed for a while now and all your recipe’s remind me of my family. It’s cozy!
I was born at the Palermo airport in 1954. I was premature and they delivered me in an janitors closet sink. He was the medical guy, janitor and security guard back then. My first name Mark-John is based on my grandfather Marco and the Janitor Gianni/John. I moved all over europe until I turned 15 when we came to the states. My Dad worked for the US Govt. so we lived in Embassies around the world, but my home base was Catania. I never learned the art of using a measuring guide. I learned thea art of sight, smell, and taste from my grandfather, and grandmother. IF you notice I never put measurements for the recipes and there is a reason for that. One I don’t bother measuring so I can’t give a measurement. Two it’s about making the recipe yours not mine. I want people to learn to cook and make it their way not my grandmothers.
I have a new cucumber salad recipe I am posting later today. Just a few things I tweaked.
I made it yesterday. Very good. Also made your cucumber salad version.
