Ciao Everyone!
This is no way a Sicilian/Italian sandwich unless you do what I did when I made part of it homemade. My advice is don’t do it. Everything else in the recipe is cool, but one item.
We’ll get into that in a minute.
The Crux of the Situation
Okay, so there’s a blank in front of butter for a good reason in my case, and many others out there.
I have an allergy to peanuts, peanut oil, sesame seeds, and sesame oil. Keeps me of the Chinese, Thai, and Japanese restaurants most times. Although if you ask nicely they will accommodate the meal by using plain oil.
Do you have any idea what any Asian meal taste like without the correct ingredients-might as well eat cardboard for dinner.
The same goes for Peanut Butter and Jelly/Jam sandwiches.
But, there’s more. This wonderful allergy I was diagnosed with later in life (50’s) keeps me from eating Snicker Bars, Reese’s Cups, and everything peanut bad I love.
Although the Mars Company being somewhat smart, a little late if you ask me has come out with Snickers with Almonds and Pecans. Now if they w old do that for other peanut bars that would be cool.
Anyway I’ve tried different solutions-Walnuts, Pecans, and Almonds. I’ve even made my own nut butter, we’ll get to that in a sec.
I’ve tried the articulated Peanut Butter and guess what, it taste like it’s name, artificially, sorry guys.
A Solution
Then Patti was out and found cashew butter. It looked more like peanut butter in color so she said “let me bring this home.” Remember she had already been through my complaining about walnut, almond and pecan butter.
Not an Endorsement for Brands
I opened the jar to see its light color just like peanut butter, but how was the taste?
I can honestly say it isn’t bad. Actually it seems to have less salt than peanut butter, but still keep the flavor. I enjoy cashews and this seems like a good fit for my taste buds. Never mind the relief in Patti’s face when I yelled YES while eating a celery stalk with cashew butter.
These is a trade off though. They don’t have chunky cashew butter, but I’m planning on writing to the company about that, nor does it have that crisp salt flavor you tasted in peanut butter, and it’s higher in price (of course). At this point who cares. I just want a cashew butter and jelly sandwich I can enjoy, and nope I have it.
One very, very important thing I learned while experimenting in making my own nut butter was not to use Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It just doesn’t work for nut butter.
Give it a Try
